Emirates Aluminium – The Largest Single Site Aluminium Smelter in the World
The UAE has been a key supplier of aluminium to the world markets for over three decades. With further growing demand for aluminium in the mid 2000’s a strategic vision to grow the UAE’s status in the global market place was conceived.
This vision is currently being realised through the construction of a completely new smelter complex at Al Taweelah near Abu Dhabi. When complete, the smelter complex will be the largest single site producer of aluminium in the world.
Project Developer – Emirates Aluminium (EMAL)
The Project developer, EMAL, was established in 2007 and it is a joint venture between Mubadala and DUBAL.
Mubadala is an Abu Dhabi based public joint stock company and DUBAL is Dubai Aluminium.
Project
Phase 1 of the project will produce 700,000 tonnes of high quality aluminium per annum; phase 2 will grow the capability to 1.4 million tonnes per annum. EMAL will then be the 5th largest producer of aluminium in the world.
1st metal production is planned for December 2009.
The site covers 6km2 of land adjacent to the Gulf at Al Taweelah, Abu Dhabi.
Al-Futtaim Carillion
Al-Futtaim Carillion has wide and in depth knowledge of aluminium smelter construction through its 30 year association with main civil engineering delivery in DUBAL.
We were delighted to be awarded the first major civils package at EMAL in March 2008 to construct the Phase 1 smelter potlines. We have subsequently been awarded 12 further packages across the smelter reduction area, carbon area and the power generation area of Phase 1.
Al-Futtaim Carillion is the largest contractor on site carrying out the primary civil engineering works in terms of value and resources. We currently have a peak labour count of 5000 which is led by a team of 400 staff.
